I can't stand this feature, as is. First, we should be able to voice our own pieces. AI cannot do inflection, humor, sarcasm, or emotion of any real kind. Good writing involves all of these devices and more. Second, the AI reads everything on the page, including the caption/credits under our photos, which is awkward. Also, it reads pull quotes, which we've been encouraged to use for visual effect. But the pull quotes are typically also in the text, so they are being read twice, which seems odd to the listener. Audio is an absolutely great tool to add to Medium, but relying on AI to do it (which Medium does for everything it seems nowadays), and not even giving the option of author narration is absurd. Audiobooks are not read by robots. Neither should essays be.
